My webcomic memoir, Back In Session, is based on the first session with my D&D group after our summer break. I was nervous before, because I wasn’t sure what would have changed over the summer, but after we all got back together, I remembered why I love it so much.
I chose this memory because my D&D group, Pink Dragons, is such a joyful, happy, and creative part of my life, and it has really taught me a lot about how friends can be made in so many different ways. I knew that I wanted to make my memoir about D&D from the start, and I was really just trying to find the right memory for the webcomic.
To convey emotions, I had a frame of me breathing, to show my nerves, as well as me trying to calm down. I also used lighter shades and less black closer to the end, to show joy and happiness. I didn’t use a ton of words, only for small bits of dialogue or small thoughts, and I tried to show as much in the images as possible, and use words to enhance the images where needed.
My memoir is inspired by the themes in Persepolis of how small things can bring so much joy, especially during times when there are scary or sad things happening in the world.
