For my project, I chose to write about a really big moment of self expression. To me, self expression and identity is unbelievably important. I chose this topic because it was a moment that was a huge part of my journey to fully figuring out my identity and the way I want to express myself. I started this process with a really simple sketch and outline, pretty much only brief ideas and stick figures. I eventually started drawing each frame more detailed, and then finally got to inking and coloring. I thought I was finished with my webcomic until I realized there were little to no words, and you couldn't really tell what was going on some of the time. I added captions, some shading, and symbols above the character’s head. The captions were obviously to tell you what was  going on in the story, the shading was to show emotion (in this case, feeling judged and disappointed), and the symbols (exclamation marks, question marks, ellipses) were to show little spurs or shocks of emotion. The story is very obviously mostly relying on the visuals, but some parts of the story would not make any sense if not for the captions. After all of this, I finally got my finished product! A really huge part of persepolis I noticed was how much Marjane also valued self expression. I really connected with her because of this, and reading about another girl growing up with such a connection to herself and her identity was so satisfying and comforting. The moral of my webcomic is that although self expression may be hard to comfortably achieve, once you do, your whole entire perspective on yourself will change for the better!
