Then the Ball Touched My Foot

Madlen Nerses

For my webcomic memoir I chose to write about when I started playing soccer. When I first started playing soccer I obviously wasn’t really good at it but I really enjoyed it. Starting soccer for me was new to me, but at the same time wasn’t. When I was younger I grew up with soccer, my dad watched soccer all the time and he also used to play it when he was younger and my grandpa helped host chants for games too. So when I got the chance to start playing I jumped up in excitement. Like in Persepolis this moment for me was a moment that helped build who I am today and that some change is good. Because for me I don't really like change, so when I try something new it's kind of nerve wracking but now I don't really feel that way.

When I started brainstorming ideas for my webcomic I had no idea what I should have it be about. So, I started thinking of things I do frequently and things that help build who I am without the topic being too personal or sensitive for me. So I thought “hm, I play soccer, talk about it a lot, and I have met my best friend through soccer so this is a good topic for me to have for my webcomic.” I also think it also captures taking a step outside my comfort zone and trying to figure out what I like and who I am.

Since I'm not that good at drawing and didn't really like the idea of using AI for my pictures, I decided to do simple drawings. For my panels I did really easy drawings that probably a first grader can do. For the people I drew stick figures and added some clothing to them so they aren’t just basic stick figures. While I'm writing this I didn't really feel like adding colors because I like the idea of a simple black and white drawing.
