For my webcomic, I chose to focus on a personal experience from my childhood how I used to move schools frequently. I decided to tell this story because I believe those constant changes had a major impact on who I am today, especially when it comes to how I learn and perform in class. Moving from one school to another meant I was always starting over new teachers, new classmates, and new environments. Over time, I noticed that this constant adjustment made learning more challenging for me. It sometimes takes me longer to feel comfortable or confident in a classroom setting because I’m always thinking about how to adapt.
When reading Persepolis, I noticed that Marjane’s story mirrors my own experiences in so many ways. Marji constantly had to adapt to new surroundings and cultural expectations, first because of the political trouble in Iran and later when she moved to Europe. Like Marji, I also experienced that sense of disconnection when entering new environments. Every time I switched schools, I felt a mix of excitement and fear, excitement about the new possibilities, but fear of not fitting in or being left behind. This similarity between my experience and Marji’s made me feel connected to her story on a deeper level.
Before creating my webcomic, I spent some time brainstorming specific memories that shaped who I am today. I thought about the different schools I attended, the moments I felt lost or isolated, and how I eventually found ways to adjust each time. Once I had my ideas, I began sketching out a rough storyline that reflected those experiences. I included scenes of my bedroom, classrooms, and kitchen that represented different stages of my journey. I tried to show not just the physical settings but also the emotions tied to nervousness, curiosity, loneliness, and finally, growth.
Since drawing isn’t my strongest skill, I traced some ideas from my computer to help build each panel more accurately. After completing the sketches, I began coloring them carefully to match the mood of each moment, softer tones for calm memories and brighter or darker ones for more emotional scenes. As I colored, I added dialogue and short thoughts that helped express what I was feeling in each situation. Through this process, I realized how powerful visual storytelling can be.
