My Voice
Hattie Getzchman

My web comic is about my voice when I was younger. You’re probably thinking, what could be so interesting about a 6-year-old’s voice? I chose this topic because when I think about my younger self the first 3 big things that come to mind are; my haircut, my constant stomach aches and of course, my raspy voice. It’s important to me because it’s something that shaped me into the person I am now, even though it’s small. To most grownups my voice was cute, but to me it felt like it made me stick out, when I just wanted to fit in. This story was actually sort of hard to put onto paper in animations because I don’t fully remember first grade. So, in order to make the story, I asked my parents what they remembered. I wanted to know what I was like and what feelings I felt then that stood out, surrounding anxiety, fitting in and my voice. I used animation to express tone and feelings mostly through drawings of my eyebrows, and with color. So for example most of the time when I was sad in the panels my clothes were cooler shades, usually blues and purples. When balancing words and images, I used words to tell the basics of the story. Where the animations showed more my emotions and thoughts. I think my story relates to Persepolis and Marjane's story because I think both of us are finding our identities. Of course, hers is much more heavy than mine, so it’s hard to relate a story of a child's voice to a story of theocracy and war. I want to tell younger Hattie that the differences about you are what make you yourself, and that she doesn't need to worry about fitting in.
