For my graphic memoir, I chose to write about my unique experience following the Eaton fire in January. My process began with brainstorming. Even though it was a painful choice because the feelings and moments in my memoir are still happening, I knew right away that would be the best thing to write about because it was a raw memory and feeling, and I could lean into that. My graphic memoir connects to Persepolis because like her, only in a different way, something catastphophic turned my life upside down and I had to grow up faster than I needed to, and learn how to deal with change and loss. I used pencil, pen, and colored pencil, and I tried to make the images convey the emotions and ideas that the text didn’t or to elaborate. For example, in the tenth panel, the text is simple and leaves out all of the emotional aspects of the memory, but the image, me carrying a suitcase and pulling my (broken) heart behind me on a string adds meaning and emotion. In multiple panels, I use black and white for contrast between two aspects.
