Why Forgiveness Can Change The World
Owen Perry
It might sound simple, but forgiving people has taught me that not everybody that hurts
you is a bad person. I believe that forgiving people can make a big difference in the world.
This belief came from all of the forgiveness that I’ve given to and received from my friends and family. An example of this is when I was playing three flags up and I caught the ball a weird way and broke my finger. My friends laughed after I yelled out in pain. At first I was mad, I mean, they were laughing at me after I broke my finger!
Then I thought about it and I knew they were not laughing in spite of me, they didn’t know what happened and just tried to make a joke out of it. They were very sorry afterwards and I forgave them. They are still some of my good friends to this day.
I also think that forgiving people shows maturity, forgiving someone after they did something bad to you can be hard sometimes, and if you have the maturity and heart to forgive someone, then you can be with that person and figure out why they did it. It helps a lot if you can figure out why that person did something to you, and it can help make forgiving easier.
I think that sometimes people do things because they are going through something or they just don’t know the whole story. If they are going through something, then try to stick with them to see if you can help. And if they don’t know the whole story, then try to be patient with them. And if it’s too hard, then just take a break from them for a little while.
At the end of the day, forgiving good people reminds me that not everyone means harm and that one thing doesn't have to get in between people. The next time you get hurt by someone, try to remember to try to forgive them.
Writer's Statement
In my “This I believe Essay,” I wrote about how I think that forgiving people can make a big difference in the world. My example is that I was playing three flags up and I caught the ball a weird way and broke my finger. My friends laughed at me after I yelled out in pain. I was mad at first because they were laughing at me after I broke my finger.
Then I thought about it and I knew they were not laughing in spite of me, they didn’t know what happened and tried to make a joke out of it. They were very sorry and apologized after I told them what happened.
I started with how I think forgiving people can make a difference in the world and I started like that because there is and was a lot of hate and destruction that could have been avoided if people forgave people.
A writer that inspired me was Bobby Doerr. He wrote about how he didn’t play to the grandstand and show off. That inspired me to use his technique of using his experience to help make his point.
I want readers to take away that forgiving people is not just a good thing to do, but also a way to find friends in unexpected places.
