Everyone Should Learn to Cook

Oliver Grefenstette

Most people don’t truly think about how going out to restaurants usually is a lot less healthy and usually costs quite a bit more than cooking your own food at home. Partly, because of this, I believe that everyone should at least learn how to cook their own food, and that they should do so throughout their lives.

This belief is from when I was growing up; most nights my parents would take me home, and start cooking food for dinner. Most of the time, it would be healthy, like white fish or steak as our mains, with potatoes and veggies on the side. This means that we almost never went out to restaurants.

What I’m truly saying is that, if you cook your own food, even for a few nights, you will start a good habit. Plus, it saves money that you can spend on other things that you enjoy, such as thrifting or shoe shopping, golf clubs or that one other thing that you really enjoy.

Now, whenever my dad is making steaks for dinner, I will help him sear the filets or ribeyes on the griddle. It’s always fun to do that with him, and the steaks are a good source of protein to go on the plate.

For example, you might make your own meal on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and you start your habit. Your good habit of cooking your own food some nights. If you go at least three nights a week for a month, and you can’t stop. This will lead to you being happier, because you will be eating healthier. Plus, you will begin to see the financial impact of doing this compared to what you were doing before you changed.

So yes, I believe in ‘Everyone should learn to cook their own food’, and I think you should too! If you do, then you will be happier, I tell you that. Maybe if we all cooked our own food, then this world might be a bit healthier.

Writer's Statement

In my essay, I wrote about how everyone should learn to cook their own food. I chose this belief because of how my parents have been teaching me to cook my entire childhood, and I’ve taken that into account to make my belief.

I started my ‘This I believe’ essay by thinking about how I should explain my belief to my readers, and so that’s why I started with my hook, ”Most people don’t truly think about how going out to restaurants usually is a lot less healthy and usually costs quite a bit more than cooking your own food at home.” This is a very bold statement, so that is why I went with it. The two stories that I shared during the essay were, for one, to show where this belief let me down. The other one was to show myself using my belief.

On my first draft, I had in most paragraphs, the same idea repeated over and over throughout the body paragraphs. So, on my first revision, I got rid of some of those lines, and added a fourth body paragraph to show myself using this belief. Adding that paragraph really made my essay flow a lot better.
