I Believe That Having Your Own Personality Makes Life More Enjoyable

Marlowe Pastor

Have you ever wondered what makes life appear interesting and enjoyable to you? There might be a couple things, but one of the most important things is how you view life personally. I believe that being your own person makes life more enjoyable.

For a lot of my life, I've based my interests and personality off of my older sister. Her music taste, style, humour, and lifestyle. 2 years ago, she left for boarding school, and since then, I've found out so much about myself and my taste, and I've found a whole new perspective on how I look at my life. I noticed how different I became after I curated my energy and everyday life to be as personal to me as possible. I realized that life becomes more enjoyable after you find out who you really are. You really are only going to live one time, and it's important for you to be the most authentic version of yourself during the time you have. The way you view things might change, people might start to point out that your physical (or emotional) appearance might change, and most importantly, you might start to feel more confident about yourself. Being your own person doesn't only mean liking certain music or clothes or movies, it’s more personal than that. It means finding what and who makes you yourself.

The things that you love are a reflection of you, and those things are everywhere. Those things won't even begin to intrigue you until you start looking for them. That's what’s gonna make you your best self. Life starts becoming more personal once you find what/who you love. At the end of the day, you can like whatever you want, as long as it’s what you like, not what others like or what you want to like. That's what makes someone a “good person”. Passion. I believe that being your own person makes life more enjoyable.

Writer's Statement

For my “This I Believe” essay, I wrote about how being yourself improves your life so much. I talked about personal experiences that helped me realize this. Being myself is very important to me, whether I'm expressing it through my taste or through my personality.

I really do believe that since I started being myself more, I'm much happier. I wanted my essay to be read as me personally giving the reader this advice, so I tried to use emotion to capture my point. I think it’s really important to try your hardest to be the best version of yourself, no matter the context or situation. Being humble and kind, and also feeling like wherever you go is a space where you can be yourself.

People who are themselves are not only the most genuine people, but also the coolest. Taking on this point of view might improve your life, whether it’s intentional or not.
