Honesty
Ezra Yenofsky
I believe that honesty isn’t always the best policy. Every time I think about someone that I've hurt or that has hurt me, I’m reminded that we should all think before we talk. When we were kids we were taught that honesty is always the best policy and that no matter what you should be honest to everyone. For example, if something in your house gets broken, and your parents ask you “who broke this?” your reply should be “I’m so sorry mom/dad it won’t happen again.” But as they get older it becomes A LOT MORE complicated.
I started believing in this after someone told me that I wasn’t good enough. I noticed that the way they said it made me believe it and I started to hate myself. Feeling this way made me want to be distant from everything. I felt like I wasn’t even in my body. It was like I was a puppet, like I couldn't move my own body, I couldn’t talk, I couldn't walk, I couldn’t even breathe.
On a deeper level, honesty reminds us that although the truth can be useful sometimes, it can be harmful if you don’t use it properly. In a world where honesty is always the best policy, first we need to think about the people we are being honest to and of course you shouldn’t be honest to a stranger. But we all need to be careful of how honest we are because in some cases people are very sensitive and can be hurt easily.
For example, when I told my sister she wasn’t good at drawing, she ran to my mom crying and said that I was bullying her. But I didn’t realize at that moment that I was doing anything wrong. I was just trying to be nice and tell her so that she could fix it but instead she just didn’t want the truth and instead she wanted support. That’s why I believe honesty isn’t always the best policy because it could hurt them on the inside but they might not show on the outside.
So yes I believe that honesty isn’t always the best policy. So the next time you are honest about something, remember to think about what their reaction could be, and if it would hurt them physically or emotionally. So in the end, we are all friends, but that could come and go really quickly. So make sure to be careful with how you say things. So this concludes my essay on honesty, therefore I believe that honesty isn’t always the best policy.
Writer's Statement
My belief is that honesty isn’t always the best policy. I chose this belief because I feel like honesty can be a relationship ender and I feel like people who have a good relationship deserve to know what the consequences of their actions could be. One of the personal stories that I told was about my sister and that I told her she wasn’t good at drawing. I started this essay by stating my belief that honesty isn’t always the best policy. Because some people don’t believe in what I believe in. And basically that is my hook. Some specific details I included where: the story about my sister, and the story that someone told me I wasn't good enough. The reason I chose these details is so that the readers could understand what the reaction of their action could be. My essay was inspired by myself (Ezra Yenofsky). So that is my TIB (This I Believe) essay. I hope you all enjoyed it. I loved writing it and it really made me dig deep inside myself and things like that are hard to do because sometimes you don’t want people to know what has happened to you or others and it can be hard to express yourself. I want to thank some people. Those people are: Emily Shea, Bailey Peraza, and my mom and dad for helping me through this journey of writing an essay.
