I Believe That People Should Treat Animals With Respect

Elliott Coller

Respect your pet

I never understood why some people had pets. I told myself they cared for them, that they loved them. I knew that wasn’t true. Some people shouldn’t have pets. Not if they don’t love them, not if they don’t feed them, not if they mistreat them. They deserve better.

I believe that people should treat their pets with respect.

One day I was in the car with my dad and there was someone who had a dog. When I saw him hit the dog, I realized pets aren’t for everyone. It was at the corner. The man walked forward, his dog didn’t. The dog prepared to take the hit, as if this was an old trick. The man raised his hand and then came the blow.

I noticed the dog's posture. It was almost in defensive mode. The dog’s tail tucked, ears back, and him ready to take the loss. And when I saw the dog's face my heart just sank. The man was unfazed of the damage he had done. My dad pretended not to notice, but I know he did. The rest of the car ride was silent.

I found this belief, not from bad things, but from good things too. I am reminded of this when I come home to my two dogs, Penny and Cinnamon, I see their tails wagging and when I come through the door they run to the couch for love. Another example is when I get mad and my dogs come to comfort me, and I’m reminded how much they love, and mean to me.

You can do this by showing your animal love and respect. Show your pet care and don’t be mean, be kind, don’t mistreat them, show them love, don’t hurt them, hug them. Don’t abandon them, embrace them. Show them that you really do care. Think about your actions. Because the more you respect them, the more they respect you.

Animals feel so much more than you think. They feel pain, they feel fear. They can sense when you're mad, when you're sad. When you're in a bad mood, they
will come and check on you. Remember that animals have feelings, just like you do. Never forget that.

Writer's Statement

Writers statement

In my “This I Believe“ essay, I wrote about how people should treat their animals with respect. I chose this belief because I love animals and I feel strongly about treating animals with respect. The personal story that I chose was when I saw for the first time someone mistreat an animal. I started my essay with a bold statement, hoping that people would want to keep reading. I wanted to make sure that I portrayed my point of view and made sure everything I said made sense. I also wanted to make sure that I added emotion, not just how I felt but the emotions of the dog and his owner too.

When I read the first “This I Believe" essay, I was like “this is cool!“ When Emily said we would be doing one, I was so excited! I wasn’t inspired by any specific essay, I kind of already had this topic in mind. One thing that everyone knows is that I love all animals. I will always ask to pet a dog on the street. Trust me, ask basically any one of my friends. Emily once asked me to find some good essays to read, and it was so fascinating to see how many people have written a “This I Believe“ essay! There were so many cool essays. It’s so fun seeing what really matters to people.

I had to make a few changes because I had a difficult time making sure that my topic was good. I had to change my topic a lot, but after three topics, I realized that this topic was it. I really hope that when people read my essay, that they think about how much their pets mean to them.
