New Friends New Finds
Donna Cruz
Snack time. Cloudy. Damp. The Game. That’s what I was thinking when I stepped out of the north building with my friends , ready to play a fantasy game we invented that had become our whole fourth/fifth grade lives . Today was just a normal day at school playing the game but when I ran up to join the others at our usual hang out spot( I was the last to finish my snack .) My friend Skye walked up to me and said very matter of factly “we have powers now”.That was just one of the many many times with my friends that caused us to create a 370 page google doc with stories from fifth grade leading up to now. This 370 page google doc was the thing that got me into creative writing. I believe that making an unexpected friend can lead you to something really cool.
I learned this after I got introduced to my best friend Leela in fourth grade. Leela had been online for the first half of the year because Covid had just ended. Leela had known Grayson because they were in a class together before it started. I don't remember exactly what happened that day but what I do remember is eating lunch together . We didn't talk much but after that we partnered up for a Spanish project. We were supposed to make a story in Spanish together , and the one we came up with was slightly ridiculous but it worked . After that, we became closer and by the next year, best friends.
This isn't about making new friends though. It's about finding your people. Humans need companionship in their life because without it we’d all go insane. What I'm saying is that we all need a friend that can help you discover things that in the future might just become a big part of your personality. This matters because having the right friends can make your life so much better and way more interesting. If you only read or watched one book series show or movie you’d get bored eventually, but if you switched it up every once and awhile then you’d always stay entertained. Having the right friends can help you do just that.
You can see this at a sleepover or at any other hang out with friends. You’re all just hanging out and having fun with each other and talking about things you enjoy and stuff you should watch or read whether it's Percy Jackson or Stranger Things. I went to the Wings of Fire Fanwing Fest last year with my friends but I would have never gone to it if they hadn't gotten me into it.
So yes, I believe that making an unexpected friend can lead you to something really cool, and I for one think you should to because nobody wants to be alone or misunderstood and with the right friends that isn't an option.
Writer's Statement
In my this I believe essay I wrote about how sometimes making an unexpected friend can lead you to something really cool. I chose this belief because my best friends got me into many of the things that are a big part of my personality today. I chose to share the story of how I met my best friend Leela in fourth grade because after that she introduced me to things like The Dragon Prince, Wings Of Fire and many other things that we still obsess over to this day.
I started my essay with a scene of me and my friends playing this fantasy role playing game that we invented and called the game because we never came up with a name for it. I decided to start my essay this way because I wanted readers to feel what we felt when we played, even though we probably looked ridiculous . Out of all of the essays I've read , none of the authors really inspired my essay that much. What really inspired me was just thinking about my friends and all the time we’ve spent together. I included small snapshots of things I've done with my friends in the past and my friend Sky saying “ we have powers now” to me because it was kind of influential to my fifth grade brain and symbolizes my and my friends' love of all things fantasy . I used some sensory details and tried to immerse you in what i was feeling as much as possible
During revision I added a title that symbolized my story while also making it sound like me because I wanted readers to know what the story was about before they even started to read it. My hope is that after reading my essay readers will feel more inspired to hang out with their friends and will be less afraid of making new ones. The ending is a strong statement to tell you that with the right friend you’ll never feel alone.
