This book by Jeanne DuPrau is about a city that is completely dark during the day, and the night. The city is well lit with street lights and lights in the homes. But one day, there was a blackout, causing the entire city to plunge into darkness. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it shocked everyone in the city. Then, a couple weeks later, another one cast over the city, longer than the previous one. Then it happened again, and it kept sending the city completely dark for longer and longer periods of time. One girl and boy in particular were very concerned. Their names were Lina and Doon. They had lived in the city all of their life, and had never seen anything like it before. Come to think of it, all of the citizens had lived there their entire life and had never experienced anything like this before. Then, food started to become scarce. People were starting to worry about the state of the town and if it was going to survive any longer. Lina was the town messenger, so she went all around town, and knew every inch of the city. When she was on her route, she found a piece of paper. It was very old, half of the paper was ripped and unreadable. She looked at it with Doon, and he said he had seen something like that in his house. When they put the two papers together, they saw that it made instructions, instructions on how to get out of the city! No one to their knowledge had ever tried to leave the city before, but now they could with instructions made by the founders of the town. Do they make it out, and do they tell the ton about the instructions? Read the book to find out! I recommend this book to anyone who likes post-apocalyptic/dystopian novels or a good adventure story. I would also recommend this book to anyone who has seen the movie because I feel like the book is a lot better.
